ABSTRACT

David J. Teece’s core ideas are likely to be developed – in particular the idea of the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities. The close study of the micro-foundations, urged by Teece, has become highly influential in the fields of strategy and international business. Teece's work helps to explain how companies can change and adapt during turbulent times to sustain their competitive advantages. An overview of the debate in the dynamic capabilities literature, taken together with an evaluation of the socio-economic environment, highlights certain of Teece's core ideas as likely to be developed by researchers in the field, in particular the idea of the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities. Teece's ideas are still relevant, and are likely to be of continuing importance in the coming years of increasing global competition and organizational changes. By using Teece's vocabulary, researchers have explored how an international retailer from China can build and classify its dynamic capabilities in a turbulent foreign market.
