ABSTRACT

The phenomenal success of “A Cyborg Manifesto” gave Donna Haraway an international reputation as a leading feminist and cultural theorist. The very success of the manifesto may have skewed the reception of Haraway’s other work, which is worth reading in its own right. However, the reception of “A Cyborg Manifesto” was transformative for Haraway’s international reputation and is the text for which she is most famous—indeed, for many readers, she will be synonymous with this text and less known for any of her other work. “A Cyborg Manifesto” is by far Haraway’s most significant work in terms of citation, recognition, and general influence. In a way, the manifesto’s success somewhat overshadows Haraway’s subsequent work and achievements, even though it also helped to widen her readership and cement her authority as a leading name in feminist cultural studies.
