ABSTRACT

The Lawless project team initially identified more than 200 episodes since World War II in which technological information reported in the popular news media had concerned or alarmed segments of the public. The subsample of 45 cases Lawless finally chose for detailed study was intended to be representative, but no specific criteria for inclusion were closely followed. Excluded were routine problems such as transportation accidents and industrial fires, occupational hazards such as mine disasters and other unsafe working conditions, and problems involving government security (except the Dugway sheep kill).
