ABSTRACT
Why should the general public care about environmental management systems (EMSs)? In short, EMSs may transform the way that government regulates for environmental protection. About one-half of the states are presently engaged in environmental regulatory innovation programs (many of them built around EMSs), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently launched the National Environmental Performance Track program (which rewards companies that implement an EMS).
