ABSTRACT

An environmental management system (EMS), when properly implemented, can improve the condition of the environment and enhance the environmental performance of the organization that implements it. An EMS also can generate better relationships between the firm and its customers and other stakeholders, improved conditions for the local community, and streamlined and enhanced relationships with government agencies involved with the firm. In addition to these attributes, EMSs hold promise for producing global benefits that range from enhancing the gains from trade to a more active participation of developing country governments and firms in protecting the global environment.
