ABSTRACT

Greenpeace was started in 1971 by a group of activists determined to bring attention to the dangers of nuclear weapons testing. They leased a small fishing vessel, called the Phyllis Cormack, and headed for Amchitka Island in Alaska, where testing was scheduled, hoping to obtain media attention by placing themselves in harm’s way. Although they were intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard en route, their efforts nonetheless increased public awareness of the issues surrounding nuclear testing.
