ABSTRACT
P Rofessional researchers and facilitators are powerful actors in initiatives for local development. Even in participatory approaches, they tend to dominate communication and decisionmaking processes. This chapter, reporting our experiences with communities in the eastern Amazon of Brazil, focuses on how professional researchers and facilitators can better recognize and manage the power differentials that shape their own interactions.
