ABSTRACT

There are several factors that should be considered in selecting a method for monitoring surface cleanliness. The factors discussed here are the ones that are most important but by no means represent a complete list of factors that should be considered. There may be other factors that are pertinent to a particular application that should be considered. (1) Type of contaminant - One of the first factors that should be considered in se-

lecting a cleanliness monitoring method is the type of contaminant that need to be monitored. Is the contaminant particulate or thin film type? If thin film contamination, is it organic or inorganic or both? Does the technique under consideration monitor the type of contaminants that need to be monitored?
