Abstract-Comparedtoanideallyflatsurface,theroughnessprofileofarealsolidresultsinanadditionaldeformation ofthetriplelineregion.ThiscanbedescribedbyGood'scontortionalenergy parameterF.Intheliterature,equalF-valuesareassumedforbothwettinganddewettingexperimentsonhomogeneoussurfaces.Herewepresentanewapproachforthemissingexperimental evaluationofthisassumption.Aseriesofethyleneglycolcontactanglemeasurementsonthreepure solids(paraffinwax,polypropyleneandpolyetherimide),eachcoveringthewholerangefrom smoothtoroughsurfaces,showthatthisassumptioniscorrectforthesematerials.Asaconsequence,Wenzel'scontactangleisobtainedasthearithmeticmeanofthecosinesofadvancingand recedingcontactanglesonagivensolid.TheadditionaldeterminationofWenzel'sroughnessfactor rbyanindependentScanningForceMicroscopystudyenablesdeterminationofYoung'scontact angleatthermodynamicequilibriumfromtheadvancingandrecedingcontactangleswithoutvaryingsolidsurfaceroughnessinthewettingexperiments.
