ABSTRACT
More than 25 years ago it was found that directing a short intense pulse of laser light at a surface could remove contaminants from that surface (1]. In the US patent literature, laser cleaning was first described in a rather unspecific way [2]; 20 years later it was claimed that controlling the polarization [3] of the laser light and its angle of incidence [ 4] offered certain advantages.
