ABSTRACT

The term nano-, which denotes a factor of 10−9 times, it seems originated from the Greek nanos, meaning dwarf. The prefix has been associated with the length scale when the term nanometer is used, meaning a billionth of a meter. Not so long ago, 1 nm was considered big in the chemistry world of molecules while 0.1 μm (100 nm) was considered very small in the science and technology of conventional materials. Intermediate-sized materials between these typical limits whose properties are size dependent and strongly influenced by the surface characteristics are considered nanomaterials. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology has developed into an exciting scientific field having a great deal of impact on surrounding technologies, with nanomaterials being an important driving force in this tendency.
