ABSTRACT

To be able to characterise the various properties of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and to communicate the results from such measurements is crucial in the fast developing field of nanotechnology. It is only through a full understanding of each measured quantity that it is possible to move from a research basis towards fully-fledged commercialisation and control of manufacturing processes, ensuring product quality. International standardisation of measurements, sampling procedures and conditions and the development of reference materials are instrumental in facilitating this understanding. In addition, for an open communication between the stakeholders (manufacturers, researchers, regulators and consumers) to take place, there is a need for an agreed upon nomenclature to be developed and disseminated.
