ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the new aspects of artificial olfaction such as odor recorder, olfactory display, and teleolfaction. The odor recorder is a gadget used to record odor as well as reproduce it. Experiments on recording fruit flavors using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gas sensors were successfully performed. Moreover, a large-scale experiment using mass spectrometry was performed. The olfactory display is an apparatus used to present smells. The method to realize multi-component olfactory display is described. Then, the application of the olfactory display, such as cooking game, is briefly explained. The combination of the odorsensing system with the olfactory display enables teleolfaction, which reproduces the detected smell at the remote site. Its concept

and its implementation are explained. Finally, the importance of the research direction described in this chapter is summarized.
