ABSTRACT

Safety is often not presented in the sustainability literature as a key

sustainability criterion. However, safety is indisputably of vital importance in

judging the social merits of a process technology, plant, product, or industry.

This is because of the potential threat to life, health, or well-being not only

of employees, but also of resident communities near factories and users of

industrial products. In conventional sustainability terminology, these three

social groups are key stakeholders.
