ABSTRACT

7.1 IntroductionThe ‘Conference de Citoyens sur le Nanotechnologies’ (the Citizens’ Conference on the Nanotechnologies) was enacted in order to introduce a more democratic approach to science policy in the Île-de-France region. The conference was organised and financed by the Regional Council. During a four-month project period, 16 citizens participated in a deliberation on nanotechnology and the nano challenge, built around expert lectures and weekend seminars. The end result was perceived as input to the council’s science and technology policy in the form of a written statement (see Appendix 1). Consumption and consumer products were not explicitly targeted as topics.
