ABSTRACT

Notch signaling is involved in different functions of both embryonic and mesenchymal stem cells, including cell fate determination and differentiation. The utilization of bioactive materials mimicking Notch signaling could lead to the development of a novel approach for regenerative treatment. The aim of this chapter is to review the role of Notch signaling in stem cell behaviors and bioengineering approaches to induce Notch signaling from biomaterial surfaces. Finally, the promising utilization of Notch ligand-modified surfaces in regenerative medicine is reviewed.
