ABSTRACT
As an introduction to fracture in the nanoscale, this chapter
briefly describes the fundamentals of fracture mechanics, which
was developed to describe fractures in macroscopic materials. The
chapter covers two main subjects: (a) the singular stress field that
brings about a fracture (Sections 2.1-2.5) and (b) applications for a
variety of cracking phenomena (Section 2.6).
