ABSTRACT

After the discovery of single-layer graphene, the science of

graphene has quickly become widespread in the world. Research

on technological applications of graphene to various devices is

also in progress throughout the world. The discovery of new

phenomena and novel materials could contribute to human society;

however, many difficulties should be overcome before achieving

this purpose. A successful example of such activities may be the

research in spintronics developed after the discovery of giant

magnetoresistance (GMR) in magnetic multilayers. Spintronics is a

field of science and technology that utilizes both charge and spin

degrees of freedom of electrons discovered about 100 years ago

[1, 2]. Graphene could be applied to devices in the field of spintronics

and also to novel ones by using characteristic features of graphene

outside the field of conventional spintronics. To develop such a new

field, comparison of the research in the field of graphenewith that in

spintronics might be effective. In this chapter we give an overview of

the research on graphene and in spintronics. The overview, however,

could not be comprehensive but is restricted within limited subjects

because the research activities of graphene are so vast in the

world.
