ABSTRACT

Fragrance plays a critical role in hair care products. It can inspire the first purchase, communicate through the senses that the product is doing its job, give overall positive feelings about the product, and maintain brand loyalty. Shampoos are usually the easiest of the hair products to fragrance. A conditioning agent such as a quaternary ammonium derivative contributes to the base odor and has the potential to react with those perfume ingredients subject to oxidation. The perfuming of aerosols involves a great variety of interrelated problems. The individual components such as the chemistry and odor of the base, the propellant, and the container must all be considered. Various federal and state regulatory agencies are expressing concern that the quantity of volatile organic compounds released during the application of many personal care products is adversely affecting the environment, depleting the ozone layer, and enhancing the “greenhouse effect” on global warming.
