ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a series of poems written over a number of years written by the author for the Biofilm Bulletin. There are six poems in this series. The first one is "Mummy, mummy. In the second poem a cursory look is made of the seemingly intense researches underway on the manipulation of genetic material. "Suzie in the Slime with Violence" is a poem relating to the research from 1987 to 1993 on the recovery of high sand content golf greens from lateral black plug layer. The last four poems are more theoretical but do give an insight into the mechanisms of biofouling. Accumulative chemicals are those chemicals which become accumulated within the growths of the biofouling organisms but would not be utilized in bulk within the microbial cells within the growths. Examples of such accumulates would be non-degradable organics, heavy metals commonly dominated by various forms of iron and manganese, and various forms of inorganic carbon dominated by carbonates.
