ABSTRACT

The first model that took into account the presence of the collagen fibers inside the tissue, and the transversely isotropic character of the solid matrix was proposed by Pérez del Palomar & Doblaré (2006), concluding that the introduction of collagen fibres in the biphasic behavior of the articular disc implies for a prescribed displacement not only an increase of the pressurization in the tissue, but also higher stresses in the anterior and posterior bands, as well as in the lateral zone of the disc. Following this idea, these authors also simulate the dynamically opening movement, lateral excursion of the jaw (Perez-Palomar & Doblare, 2006) proposing different mechanisms of damage of the joint, and also the most common pathology such as the anterior disc displacement.
