ABSTRACT

Biopolymers, also known as biomacromolecules, have attracted a great deal of attention in the past half century because they come from renewable sources and show biocompatible characters and features.Biopolymers are a fast-growing component of electrical systems. Composites and nanocomposites based on biopolymers are being extensively used in various sensors such as optical sensors, electrochemical sensors and humidity sensors as an alternative to traditional materials, because of lowcost and biodegradability.Design, development and application of sensors based on biopolymers, namely biopolymeric sensors, have been at the core of recent research programs thanks to easy and cost-effective fabrication methods. Based on statistics and reports, we live in a new era of biomaterial progression in which such a forward-looking biomaterial or biopolymer-based nanocompositesin general are able to pave the way to design biocompatible, sensitive and selective sensors. This chapter introduces recent research on and application of biopolymers in sensor development.
