ABSTRACT

Neurodegeneration refers to the disease condition in which certain neuronal groups in the brain and spinal cord, such as neurons related to cognitive functions and cells related to motor functions, lose their structure and function and gradually die. The brain is known to be highly susceptible to oxidative stress in the body. In addition to being rich in unsaturated fatty acids that can easily be oxidized, brain is vulnerable to oxidative stress due to low expression of some antioxidant enzymes. A clinical study reported that the decrease in the reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione ratio is consistent with oxidative stress conditions. Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease, pose a major health issue and financial burden on the global healthcare systems. Neurodegenerative diseases primarily affect brain cells. The brain is known to be highly susceptible to oxidative stress in the body. The human brain is known to consume 20%–25% of the body’s oxygen, despite being only 2% of its weight.
