ABSTRACT

Rapid advancement in technology for hacking and cracking causes a major threat to misuse the personal as well official data. The conventional authentication method through text password has been shown to have significant drawbacks. Many alternative solutions based on clicking images or biometric characteristics have been widely suggested to improve security over the years. Keystroke dynamics, an interesting type of behavioral biometrics is used to identify an individual by measuring different aspects of his typing pattern. The non-necessity of special hardware and resulting low cost make it a popular area in biometric research. In this article, we have proposed an authentication technique that employs keystroke dynamics with the existing text based password. This leads to the incorporation of the simplicity of the traditional method along with the added security achieved through successive keystrokes. An adaptive mechanism has also been introduced in the scheme to update the users’ typing pattern with time.
