ABSTRACT

Competence management is about systematically connecting an organization’s goals with the competencies of its employees, taking account of both the organization’s goals and the needs of employees. The environment is complex but managing organizational goals and the related competencies in a systematic and precisely adjusted manner makes complexity appear more manageable and suggests clearly defined cause-and-effect relationships. The underlying management logic corresponds to a command-and-control mindset. The organizational management style that corresponds to the logic of instruction is “command and control”. Agile competence management always has to integrate aspects of organizational, team-related, and individual development. The more organizations become increasingly responsible actors with regard to occupational safety and health, the more top-down management styles can be supplemented or replaced with a culture of prevention. In terms of leadership, the focus shifts away from top-down management towards involvement and facilitation, with leaders serving as trainers of their staff.
