ABSTRACT

In arid countries like Kuwait with no natural water storages and limited groundwater resources, artificial recharge and storage of water in aquifers, can play a major role in the water resources management. Because of the absence of large storage reservoirs, the sea water desalination plants producing freshwater for urban use are forced to operate at sub-optimal conditions. Artificial recharge and storage of freshwater is required for meeting seasonal, long term and crisis conditions. Depletion of groundwater of brackish quality is another major problem facing Kuwait. This problem can be overcome by the reuse of wastewater. One of the best forms of reuse of wastewater is to recharge it using infiltration ponds. Such an arrangement improves the quality of wastewater to a level that it can be used for unrestricted landscaping and gardening purposes in urban areas.
