ABSTRACT

In this paper, we discuss the challenges of MTBE biodegradation. We begin by explaining why MTBE has become the most ubiquitous contaminant in United States of America. We then present the extent of its distribution in United States and the specific case of California. We will describe the biological treatment methods used for removal of MTBE then proceed to describe the case of microalgal growth on MTBE and the research in San Francisco State University, School of Engineering.
