ABSTRACT

Aegle marmelos is the scientific name for the plant wood apple and it is a native of India, distributed in tropical forests of India and other Southeast Asian countries across the Globe. This plant attains a maximum height of 10-12 m and is a medicinal, sacred, and religious plant for Hindus. Leaves of this plant are used for worshipping Lord Shiva (Hindu God). Different parts of the plant such as roots stem bark, leaves, fruits, fruit pulp, and seeds are widely used for the treatment of various ailments of human beings. A. marmelos is one of the 10 important medicinal plants recognized in Ayurveda. This holy plant's fruits are used by the native doctors for treating various health problems such as asthma, diabetes, anemia, peptide ulcers, setting bone fractures, piles, healing of wounds, swollen joints, blood pressure, jaundice, tuberculosis, genealogical disorders, and urinary disorders. Unripe dried fruits act as a digestive agent against dysentery and diarrhea. It is a rich source of antioxidants, which help in insulin secretion which leads to low blood sugar levels. Stem bark along with fruit pulp paste is used for curing bleeding piles. Root powder or bark powder helps for curing fevers. Fruit pulp with different dosages is used for the treatment of vomiting, typhoid, and rheumatoid arthritis. Leaf paste is used for curing the redness of eyes, itching, and conjunctivitis. Leaf juice is used to get rid of the emission of bad odour from the human body, and fruit pulp mixed with leaf paste, bark paste, and curd used for curing cholera and epilepsy.
