ABSTRACT

Intercultural collaborations are a rich source of learning both professionally and personally. This chapter aims to provide insights to help people understand where misunderstandings might occur, and strategies to deal with them should they arise. Many frameworks exist, with most distinguishing cultures based on their handling of power relationships, the conceptualisation of self and conflict management. Hofstede's cultural dimensions is one commonly used framework. Geert Hofstede found that cultures differ in their approach in six key areas termed ‘dimensions’; each one depicts a scale, allowing each culture to be plotted accordingly. Edward Hall divided cultures into high- and low-context categories based on verbal and non-verbal communication traits. Overall, successful intercultural relationships develop over time through mutual hard work and understanding. Refraining from assumptions and getting to know colleagues as individuals whilst maintaining an awareness of where differences might arise are key to building a successful team culture.
