ABSTRACT

Glycobiology has been one of the most dynamic research elds in recent years with signicant impact on medical research with nearly half a million papers, as indexed by the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). As the topical headings of this book suggest, a number of subtopical areas have emerged during the development of this research eld: glycoproteins, glycoconjugates, glycogens, glycooxidation, glycolipids, glycans, proteoglycans, glycogenomics, and glycosylation. Since there has been a high degree of diversity among the subtopics, the term glycoscience rather than the term glycobiology was preferred for this study. Although there have been nearly half a million articles and reviews in glycoscience, it is notable that there has not been any study on the scientometric analysis of glycoscience or an overview of the citation classics in glycoscience as in other research elds. As North’s New Institutional Theory suggests, it is important to have up-to-date information

about the current public policy issues to develop a set of viable solutions to satisfy the needs of all the key stakeholders. Therefore, following a scientometric overview of the research in glycoscience, brief information on a selected set of 25 citation classics in the eld of glycoscience is presented in this chapter to inform the key stakeholders about the inuential papers in this dynamic research eld as the rst-ever study of its kind, complementing 10 other papers relating to the citation classics in glycoconjugates, glycans, glycosylation, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, glycolipids, glycomics, glycoenzymes, carbohydrates, and algal glycoscience. It was found that although there have been 10 research sub-elds among the citation classics in glycoscience, the most prolic research area has been glycoproteins. The other marginal research elds have been glycoconjugates, glycogens, glycooxidation, glycolipids, glycans, proteoglycans, glycogenomics, and glycosylation in

line with the topical headings of this book. Hence, the research in glycoscience has strong public policy implications, providing strong incentives for the key stakeholders involved in glycoscience research.
