ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings of over 10 years of focused research into the practical use of distributed simulation for military collective training. It also presents a number of key tenets that, in the opinion of the authors, can enhance training effectiveness and could form the basis of current best practice. The chapter highlights current thinking on the best ways to make distributed collective training effective. Although this is an area of active research, it is possible to identify a fundamental set of principles which research can offer currently for making the most of this sort of training. This advice is based on five key tenets: adopt a user-centric design approach, create a total training environment, do not underestimate the benefits of co-location, provide a flexible and dynamic training environment, and use an expert White Force as part of the exercise management function.
