ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part provides an overview of representative emerging training technologies and their implications for military training, and discusses the fundamentals of training would not be complete without examining training technology requirements and visions that are driving training research. It discusses factors to consider when allocating training between live simulation events and virtual environments. The part specifically centers on virtual environment training design. It evaluates the role of a key component of many training simulators, the Instructor Operator Station. The part discusses the application of requirements and design in a training application domain that is familiar to most: medical training. It analyses the potential of training technologies and discusses artificially intelligent, adaptive computer-based tutoring systems. The part provides relevant examples of "good" training system design principles.
