ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to address some questions by examining the concept of transfer of training and how it relates to the use of simulation. It looks at factors effecting transfer of training, and outlines some potential pitfalls that can occur when choosing simulators. The chapter employs a number of worked examples in order to illustrate these concepts, and concludes with recommendations aimed at helping buyers and users of simulation. Transfer of training has been defined as "the degree to which trainees effectively apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) gained in a training context to the job". The ultimate goal of simulation-based training is to achieve the highest amount of positive transfer of training at lower cost, less time, and lower risk than can be achieved with live training methods.
