ABSTRACT

Like many of the difficult problems, control over electrical power use and distribution can be managed effectively through computers and computer based products. Let's first consider the characteristics of water and wastewater plants that call for electrical power and control systems. The sophistication of control for each operation depends on the type of operation. Demand control at a treatment facility is feasible with a computer based system if we utilize the computer's ability to control at a distance. Dedicated energy management systems have most commonly been applied to commercial buildings but they do possess features which could be useful in a water or wastewater treatment facility, especially one that employs distributed process control. In operation, energy management systems are connected into the motor starters for the equipment items to be controlled and monitored by the system. Distributed process control is achieved by using microcomputers distributed around the plant.
