ABSTRACT

Decision support systems (DSSs) are computerized systems, including models and databases, for decision-making purposes. DSSs help choosing the best alternative solution from the economic, social or environmental point of view. They are structured around the database, the model base, the user support base and their corresponding management systems (Fig. 1). Manos et al. (2004) gave an overview of DSSs and their contribution to decision-making in agriculture, including in farm planning and management. DSSs in agriculture were the subject of a large number of reports in the 1990s decade (Manos et al., 2004), before the precision agriculture (PA) concept really took off. DSS adoption in PA is low, mainly because of the differences in scientists’ and farmers’ contexts and ways of operating.
