ABSTRACT

Numerical simulations of soil fabric with distinct element modeling (DEM) have been carried out in the past (Pruiksma 2002; VanBaars 1996; Robertson & Bolton 1999), but mainly for sand and sandstone rather than clay. An assessment with DEM was not so appropriate for organic clay because of limited laboratory observations of micro-deformation of the clay fabric. This study where experimental evidence for the microdeformation of clay fabric was obtained with advanced facilities makes the use of DEM meaningful.
