ABSTRACT

As previously noted, from 1980 to 2008 the United States had accumulated nearly 185,0001 unresolved murders. Based on the number of homicides and clearance rates for murders from 2009 to 2012 this figure is either closer to or well over 200,000. As of 2004 the United States also had approximately 14,0002 unidentified sets of human remains, many of which could be homicides, further increasing our total number of unresolved cases.
