ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a review of applications of non-destructive technologies such as laser scanning to the 3D modeling of industrial buildings for subsequent structural engineering purposes. The chapter starts with the analysis of the most common problems during the rehabilitation or adaptation of industrial buildings to new facilities, as well as the current procedures to update the drawings of the construction. Applications of laser scanning technology in these environments, and its relation to automatic 3D modeling and management using BIM are examined. Finally, some common modeling approaches processing of laser scanning data in industrial environments are discussed.
