ABSTRACT

Thus, although there probably is an increased risk of perioperative death in older patients undergoing CEA, there is no increase in risk of operative stroke and hence only a minimal increase in risk of stroke and death combined. Provided patients are selected carefully, age should not therefore be a barrier to undergoing CEA. It has also been shown that about 75% of patients aged 80 years will survive for at least 4 years after successful CEA (27) and will therefore benefit from the prevention of stroke.
