ABSTRACT

Léopold Sédar Senghor was born in 1906 in Joal, in the heart of Sererland, about seventy miles south of Dakar, the present-day capital of Senegal. His father Diogoye was of noble descent and was very wealthy. His mother belonged to a less wealthy family. As a child, Senghor lived in a relatively cohesive social environment. Later on, in his poetry, Senghor would refer to his early childhood as “Le Royaume de l’enfance” (“The kingdom of childhood”).
