ABSTRACT

According to the rhetoric of Muinane1 elders, the ultimate purpose of their everyday labours, numerous rituals and other practices congruent with proper knowledge is to bring about the 'multiplication of people', that is, the propagation of their own lineages and clans and those of their ritual allies. Successful propagation is conditioned on the community's and the individual's attainment of health, material productivity and proper social relations with others. These conditions are intricately interrelated.
