ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the gap between gender policy and practice was addressed through the training of adult literacy facilitators in genderintegrated literacy programmes in north-eastern Nigeria and Upper Egypt. The successful resolution of initial gender difficulties in the programme in Nigeria led me to look closely at the gendered interactions during the training in Egypt. It is my contention that though gender issues were not included in the design of the training, they emerged, were discussed, debated and contested and were the catalyst in a slowly changing dynamic which ultimately led to positive gender outcomes.
