Norrece T.Jones’s book, Born a Child of Freedom, Yet a Slave, focuses on the “mechanisms of control and strategies of resistance in antebellum South Carolina.” In the excerpt from Chapter 2 reprinted here, Jones argues that planter manipulation of slaves’ family ties, and especially the threat of sale, was the most powerful of these mechanisms.
