The word ‘dissemination’ first appeared in 1603. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (published in 1959) defines the word thus:
Lit. 1) To scatter abroad, as in sowing seed; to spread here and there; to disperse, so as to deposit in all parts, to distribute.
