ABSTRACT
At first glance the history of British midwifery in this century seems to have been largely one of battles fought between the medical profession, health care policy-makers and midwives, over who can best care for pregnant women and their babies. More recently the women themselves have joined the battle, and at times the engagements have been extremely heated.
