ABSTRACT
IS. L respicere, to tum round (implied by reo, back) to look at, hence to feel a regard, or admiration, for, has pp respectus, whence 'to respect', the n respect coming, perh via MF-F, from the L n respectus (gen oils). On the pp respectus are formed ML respectdbilis and ML respectivus, whence (late MF-F and) E respectable and (late MF-F respectif, f -ive, and) E respective. The L n respectus becomes OF-MF respit (F ripit), whence E respite; derivative OF-MF respiter produces 'to respite'.
