ABSTRACT

Studying the difference in play patterns from recreational to elite players can provide useful data/information that can be used to help developing players to improve their game.

Hughes (1985) set an empirical model template for analysing patterns of play, by examining elite men’s squash at different competitive levels. Hughes et al. (2000) extended this work to women, they considered the following questions:

1. What are the patterns of play at elite, county and recreational standards? 2. What are the training needs with respect to periodicity and intensity, (length of

rally/game). 3. What comparisons can be made to the men’s game?
