ABSTRACT
If aid interventions are to contribute effectively to the reduction of poverty they need to be firmly grounded in an understanding of the nature of the problems addressed. This section presents a set of propositions which summarise our understanding of the contemporary state of knowledge of the nature and causes of poverty in developing countries. Some of these are fairly trite; others perhaps less so.
