ABSTRACT

The Winged Victory is a statue of a Greek goddess. She might also be the “soul” of books that grow wings. When authors make books, they are preoccupied with daily concerns and tasks. They are not aware of crafting or even growing wings themselves. Instead, ideas get generated and materials produced, all with a final product in view. The “hardware” of a book suggests this physicality-pages, fastened together. Bounded within a cover. Print and graphics suggest “hardware images.” Even these “parts” are fitted together to create a sense of the whole.
