Game, set and match: lawn tennis, from early origins to modern sport

This chapter traces the development of modern lawn tennis1 from its origins in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Emphasis will be placed on the development, during the latter part of the nineteenth century, of a game-structure which was distinctively different from the folk games played in antiquity and medieval times.2
